Marketing Japan: Tokyo Porn Theater Shuts Down After 60 Years!

By Mike in Tokyo Rogers

Well, hot on the heels of a rave review that I wrote about my favorite Japan news site, Tokyo Reporter, they come out with some interesting news - and oh so very Japan - that you couldn't find, in English, anywhere else in Japan:

The disappearance of a Tokyo landmark

Tokyo Reporter exclusive: Porn Theater in Ueno (Tokyo) Shuts Down! Interestingly, this is actually an historical occasion for Tokyo, Japan. This theater has been around since just after World War II and is a definite landmark in the area. It was one of the first theaters.

The article reports:

The Okura originally opened under the Toei film company in 1951. A decade later it screened “Flesh Market,” a tale of bondage and torture directed by Satoru Kobayashi that is typically considered to be Japan’s first pink film. By 1971, it was entirely dedicated to the pink genre.

Only in Japan could something like this hit the big news! Once again, "You are there" with the Tokyo Reporter!
